How a search works
One message, three moves. Worth knowing because it explains why you get two replies.

You ask, and we answer straight away
The assistant acknowledges what it's about to look for while the search is still
running. It deliberately says nothing about results — it can't know them yet, and
a confident “found some great ones!” before a search has run is a lie, however
friendly.

The search runs
The agent turns your message into a query and executes it across the corpus. Any
ordering you asked for is applied over the entire match set before anything is
returned, so ranking is never a rearrangement of a partial page.

You get a second reply, written with the results in hand
The follow-up knows the count, what was actually searched, and whether anything
failed — so it can tell you that nothing matched and suggest a concrete loosening,
or that far too much matched and name an axis to narrow on. Cancel at any point
and the turn is discarded whole; nothing half-finished is left behind.

Prices, and who we are not
Prices are estimates aggregated from third-party marketplace data — they move, they vary
by condition and seller, and they are not an offer to sell. Buy links to TCGplayer are
affiliate links, and we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. PlaySmart TCG is
an independent search tool with no affiliation to Nintendo, The Pokémon Company
International, Creatures Inc., GAME FREAK inc., or TCGplayer. The full notices are in

Photos you search with are never stored, and we set no cookie you didn't ask for —
the privacy page covers what we keep and what we don't.

Privacy
We keep almost nothing.
PlaySmart is a search tool, not an advertising business. We don't sell your data, we
don't run third-party ad trackers, and we don't set a single cookie that isn't doing a
job you asked for. That's also why there's no cookie banner — there's nothing to consent
to.

An image you search with is read, matched, and discarded in the same request.

Closing your account removes your lists and conversations. Nothing is held back.
Image search
Your photos aren't stored
An uploaded image is a query, not an upload. The bytes are read, matched against
the card index, and discarded within the same request — never written to disk, never
re-served, never logged as image content. The only thing that outlives the request is
the ID of the card we matched, recorded on the turn like any other search result. Your
browser shrinks the image before it is sent, so the original never leaves your device at
full size.
This is a design constraint rather than a courtesy: storing nothing means there is no
photo library to secure, to scan, to leak, or to hand over. It is also why you can search
by photo without an account.

Three cookies, all of them working
That's the complete inventory. No advertising cookies, no cross-site trackers, no
fingerprinting, and nothing shared with a data broker.

Keeps you signed in between visits. Set only once you have an account.

If we ever add something outside that list, you'll get a real consent control — one where
declining actually works — rather than a banner that dismisses to “accept.” We'd rather
change the page than add the banner.
Analytics
What we measure
Any analytics we run are cookieless and anonymous, and the questions they answer
are about the tool, not about you:
How many searches get run, and how often one comes back empty or with far too
many results — the clearest signal we have that search is failing people.
How often a photo search fails to identify a card.
Which features actually get used: bookmarks, lists, buy links.
How fast pages load and respond, measured on real devices rather than ours.
No personal information goes into any of it. If you're signed in you appear as an opaque
account ID and nothing else — no name, no email, no card. If you're a guest you're not
identified at all.
Your data
What's kept, and why
Your conversations. Stored against your account so your search history is
there when you come back, and so a result set you found last week still resolves.
Your saved lists. Private unless you choose to make one public. A public list
has a shareable link and can be found by search engines; a private one is visible only
to you.
Your account. What your sign-in provider tells us — an email address and a
display name — plus your theme preference.
Nothing else. We don't ask for your address, your payment details, or your
collection. Purchases happen on TCGplayer, not here, so we never see a card number.
Search without an account and none of this applies: a guest session holds a search
allowance and nothing more.
Third parties
Who else is involved
TCGplayer. Buy links are affiliate links. Following one takes you to
TCGplayer, where their privacy policy applies and ours stops. We're told that a
purchase happened, not what you bought or who you are.
Marketplace price data. Prices are aggregated from third-party sources. That
flows toward us, never the other way — no query of yours is sent to a price source.
That is the entire list. There is no ad network, no social pixel, and no session
recorder. If an analytics provider is ever added, it will be named here before it runs.
Your control
Deleting your account deletes everything
Not a soft delete, and not a “deactivation.” Your lists, your conversations, and any
links you shared go with it — a shared list link stops resolving rather than quietly
outliving the account that made it. There is no partial retention: we don't keep a
shadow copy for analytics, and we don't keep your data to make it easier to come back.
That's everything. Nothing here should be a surprise.
